We are thrilled to announce that at Porchfest 2018, NDGers raised $6,700 for the Walkley Community Center's Kids Multicultural Choir! Well done, everyone!!! See you all next year!
In 2018, Porchfest NDG will be raising funds to bring back the Multicultural Choir offered by the Walkley Community Centre.
At the beginning of 2014, the Walkley Centre team was selected to develop a multicultural choir through the Artiste-Animateur project of the cultural department of the City of Montreal. The project allowed for a partnership with CAMMAC which is a musical education organization which allowed access to a professional choir director.
Through the Centre's homework help program, children from Loyola district schools participated in weekly workshops during which they learned songs and discovered various musical instruments thanks to the participation of many guests. Throughout the entire program, the musical direction reflected the many cultures of origin of the children participating, and at the end of each session, the groups presented short concerts with traditional music from Québec, Pakistan, Jamaica, Israel, and many other places around the world.
Funding for the program came to an end in 2015 and since then, the Walkley Centre has been looking to find alternate sources of funding in order to bring back this wonderful music program which nearly 150 children from the NDG community benefited from.
The Walkley Centre has been offering community and recreation activities for over 30 years. It has been working to offer a variety of recreational and community programs that target all members of the surrounding community. Activities are offered 6 days a week and include an after school program, Saturday club, community garden, multicultural choir, a cosom hockey program, teen programs and exercise programs for adults and seniors. We also serve as a service point for a variety of activities offered by local community partners such as Boîte à Lunch and Jeunes en Santé. (from http://jeunesseloyola.org)
